In recent Flu seasons the nasal Flu vaccine (FluMist) was not available due to concerns about its effectiveness. Peachtree Park Pediatrics (PPP) had a good supply of Flu shots and immunized more than 5000 of our patients each Flu season.
FluMist will be available for the upcoming 2018-2019 Flu season, but concerns continue about its effectiveness, particularly against the Flu A strains that have predominated in recent Flu seasons. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children receive the Flu shot and that FluMist should only be used if the shot is not available.
For the upcoming Flu season, PPP will NOT stock FluMist. We will have plenty of Flu shots and will schedule Flu clinics throughout the Fall to give our patients multiple opportunities to get the vaccine.
Patients/parents who do not want to receive the Flu shot may have the option of getting FluMist at pharmacies, grocery stores and other locations.
The Flu shot can be given to ALL children 6 months and older. FluMist can be given to healthy children 2 years and older. FluMist CANNOT be given to children with underlying health problems like Asthma, Diabetes or Congenital Heart Disease.
