COVID-19 Update – Vaccinating Children 5-11 – Wednesday, October 27, 2021

Parents of Peachtree Park Pediatrics,

Dear parents of Peachtree Park Pediatrics,

Like many parents, PPP is eagerly looking forward to protecting our patients 5-11 years old against COVID.  If approvals go as planned and the state delivers the vaccine to our office as scheduled, we anticipate beginning to give vaccine to these children in early November.

In some ways, vaccinating 5–11-year-olds will be the same as for older children and adults:

  • Pfizer vaccine will be the one available to children 5-11
  • It will be given in a 2-dose series, 21 or more days apart
  • Children must wait in the office for 15 minutes after receiving the shot to monitor for allergic reactions
  • PPP recommends the vaccine for all children in this age range
  • The only contraindications to the vaccine are a history of an allergic reaction to a vaccine component or to a prior dose of vaccine

It is important to note that the vaccine for these younger children is different than the vaccine for older children and adults:

  • Different packaging
  • Different preparation instructions
  • Different dose per patient
  • More doses per vial of vaccine

The adult and child vaccine preparations are not interchangeable. To eliminate errors and reduce wasted doses, at first, we will only be giving COVID vaccine to 5-11-year-olds during designated COVID vaccine clinics.

  • We will schedule these clinics 2 days per week to start
  • These clinics will be in the late afternoon (around 5-7 PM)
  • Vaccine clinics will be by appointment only (no Walk-ins)
  • Vaccine clinics will be for children 5-11 only (we will not vaccinate older children or adults during these clinics)
  • Children CAN receive their Flu vaccine during COVID clinics
  • We will NOT offer COVID vaccine during our Flu clinics
  • We will NOT offer COIVD vaccine to children 5-11 during regular office visits (for check-ups or illness visits). During these visits we will schedule children to return for their COVID vaccine at the next available appointment.

As usual, we will notify parents by Facebook and e-mail when we open appointments for the vaccine clinics.  Please do NOT call until you receive a notice as we will not schedule COVID vaccine appointments until we have the vaccine in stock and the approval process is completed.

Please be patient with us as we work to immunize children in this age range while continuing to see patients in the office for check-ups and sick visits and scheduling Flu clinics.

Our goal is to immunize all our patients against COVID.  We will do our best to provide COVID vaccine in a timely manner but are somewhat limited by staffing and uncertain delivery of the vaccine.  If you cannot wait until vaccine is available in our office and can find it elsewhere, please go ahead and get your child immunized.  Federal regulations during the COVID emergency state that pharmacists do NOT need a prescription from a doctor to give vaccines to anyone 3 and older.  We will not provide prescriptions for pharmacies.

We appreciate your understanding throughout the pandemic as we have frequently adjusted office policy and procedures.  We look forward to continuing to work with you to safeguard your children’s health.

We encourage everyone to continue to use good hand hygiene and practice social distancing as much as possible. Please contact our office with any further questions or concerns.
